How did we cope in the days before the internet and social media (the answer, of course is ‘just fine’) but back then we knew no different. In a time before we knew what our friends were eating for lunch, and the day to day events of their pets, finding a job was a simple case of sending off (or, for the brave amongst us- popping in to the place itself) for an application form, sending it off, and then waiting by the phone to see if we’d been successful in getting an interview.
Nowadays, things are different, social media is woven into every aspect of our lives, for good or ill, it is here to stay. There has never been a better time to embrace sites such as Twitter, and make them work for you. If you have been thinking about finding a job on twitter, here are some top tips to help you on the way:
Build authority and look professional
Choose your username wisely, you’re unlikely to get that respect you deserve if you’re still using that same old username you’ve had since you were 15, a professional and smart profile picture is also an absolute must. As for your banner image? Well…Go for something that inspires and says something about you, it’ll speak volumes to your visitors and might just impress enough for them to connect.
A professional looking account, combined with polite and engaging tweets can go a long way to impressing potential employers.
Learn to network and engage
Follow the companies you want to work for, so many now post recruitment ads directly onto twitter, not to mention recruitment agencies themselves, follow industry leaders in your sector, liking and retweeting what they post is fine, if it is good content it’ll build your own authority, but go the extra mile here.
Offer insight, considered opinions, and replies that demonstrate your own knowledge and quality.
Hashtags
Search for them, and use them in your tweets! Using well researched hashtags can direct a tweet straight to the people you want to read them, whilst searching for relevant hashtags can direct you towards the people and companies you need to connect with.
Finding a job on twitter, is not as hard and unconventional as it may sound, with a strong, professional profile, a good reputation, and insightful and engaging content, all backed up with a first class CV/resume you have the head start you need to get that job of your dreams.
